Former White House Chief Strategist Steve Bannon’s public feud with President Donald Trump is having wide-ranging effects on the political landscape, including Republican primary fights.

In Nevada’s U.S. Senate race, incumbent Sen. Dean Heller (R-NV) is fighting off a challenge from perennial candidate Danny Tarkanian, who largely runs on the notoriety of his last name. Tarkanian’s father is the late Jerry Tarkanian, famous UNLV basketball coach.

But Tarkanian got a boost last year from Bannon, who made a point to back a set of controversial Senate candidates. Since then, Bannon-backed candidate Roy Moore (R-AL) lost a safe seat to now-Sen. Doug Jones (D-AL), and Bannon has found himself on the outs with the president.

Then came Monday’s news that Vice President Mike Pence plans to visit Nevada to campaign for Heller, according to the Wall Street Journal:

Mr. Pence is planning to visit western Pennsylvania later this month to help Republican Rick Saccone in a March 13 congressional special election.

He will travel to Nevada later this week for an official appearance with Sen. Dean Heller, a Republican facing a tough re-election bid.

It’s the latest in a long series of bad headlines for the Breitbart CEO. After feud with Trump spilled into the public, Bannon-backed candidates began distancing themselves from the now-toxic strategist. The influential Mercer family also announced it was severing ties with Bannon after he claimed he would use the family’s money should he ever decide to run for president.

The U.S. Senate primary in Nevada is sure to be a tough contest, but Tarkanian’s task just got that much more difficult thanks to his close ties to a man who proves to be more radioactive by the day.
