Democratic congressional candidate Deb Haaland, who is running for New Mexico’s 1st Congressional District, declared that she would be the “first Native American woman in Congress” while speaking at the annual NetRoots Nation convention on Friday.

“If elected, I’ll be the first Native American Woman in Congress,” Haaland said to raucous applause. “I recognize that we are on indigenous land, and I approach you with respect for the tribes whose homeland we stand on now.”

Haaland comments came “just about ten minutes before,” Sen. Elizabeth Warren (D-MA) took the stage at NetRoots.

Warren has claimed for years to be a descendant of Native Americans but has refused to provide adequate proof to support her claim.

Some have interpreted Haaland’s comments as a not-so-veiled attack against Warren.
