Dem Congressman Says His GOP Colleague Should Jump Off a Bridge

Rep. Steve Cohen (D-TN) sunk the Tennessee U.S. Senate race to a new low this week, when he told a group of pastors that Rep. Marsha Blackburn (R-TN) – who’s running against former Gov. Phil Bredesen (D-TN) in the race to replace Sen. Bob Corker (R-TN) – should jump off a bridge.

The Huffington Post had the scoop:

Rep. Steve Cohen, a Tennessee Democrat, told a group of pastors last month he hoped President Donald Trump would tell Rep. Marsha Blackburn, the GOP’s Senate candidate in the Volunteer State, to jump off a local bridge.

…“The big orange president …. He’s going to come down here and he is going to endorse Marsha Blackburn, because Marsha Blackburn, if he says, ‘Jump off the Harahan Bridge,’ she’ll jump off the Harahan Bridge,” he said in the audio obtained by HuffPost, referring to a bridge over the Mississippi River connecting Arkansas and Tennessee. “I wish he’d say that.”

The nasty rhetoric is ironic, in part because Bredesen – a Cohen supporter who is, in turn, supported by Cohen – has bemoaned “hyper-partisanship in Washington.”

It hardly gets more partisan than wishing someone from the other side of the aisle would jump off a bridge.

It’s not the first brush Bredesen has had with the kind of “hyper-partisanship” he supposedly disdains. Multiple news outlets reported last month that a Tennessee Democratic Party spokesman was under fire for calling Trump supporters “idiots” and Trump himself “Putin’s b**ch.”
