Dem Congressman Theorizes: Only Way to Prevent All Gun Violence Is to Take Away Every Gun

"The only thing that will solve every one [of these incidents] is to do away with guns," Mike Thompson told reporters on Tuesday.

Rep. Mike Thompson (D-CA) said during a press conference Tuesday that the only way to prevent all gun violence in America was to take away everyone’s gun.

House Democratic leadership held a press conference to address the upcoming vote on gun control, which would mandate “federal background checks on all gun sales, including private transactions,” according to Politico.

A reporter asked how the Democrats would respond to critics who say this legislation would do nothing to stop shootings like the one that occurred in Parkland, Florida last year and to Republicans who say that background checks would be unenforceable without a national gun registry.

Chair of the House Democratic Caucus, Rep. Hakeem Jeffries (D-NY), briefly responded to the reporter’s questions before yielding to Thompson.

“Any time the other side says that this isn’t enforceable without a national registry, that’s a code word for they want to do a national registry,” Thompson said.

Thompson then pointed out that there is nothing that can be used to create a national gun registry in the proposed legislation.

“As far as anybody who says, ‘Well, this bill wouldn’t have solved this incident,’ the only thing that will solve every one is to do away with guns. So are you telling me that the critics of my bill want to do away with all guns?” Thompson asked, rhetorically.
