Rep. Joe Crowley (D-NY), in an appearance on CNN on Wednesday, refused to answer whether House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi’s (D-CA) unpopularity would hurt Democrats in the 2018 midterms.

“Republicans are making no secret that they’re going to run once again against Nancy Pelosi in the midterms,” CNN’s Kate Bouldan said. “Does the minority leader make it harder for Democrats to win in the midterms?”

Crowley, the chairman of the House Democratic Caucus, answered by criticizing President Trump’s attacks on Pelosi. “The president and his party are bankrupt of any ideas to move the country forward,” he said. “They just keep going back to the same old playbook, and I simply don’t think it’s going to work this year.”

Bouldan pointed out that “the playbook has worked before.”

The Democratic House chairman responded with a recap of Democratic results in primaries across the country, not mentioning Pelosi.

“We see poll after poll, [the old playbook is] not going to work,” he claimed.

Yesterday, Republicans claimed their first lead of the cycle over Democrats on the generic ballot.
