A nonpartisan group based in Western Colorado criticized Rep. Jared Polis (D-CO), the Democratic nominee for governor of Colorado, this week after it became clear Polis would not attend their nonpartisan gubernatorial forum this fall.

Denverite reported Monday that Polis is sending a surrogate to the Club 20 forum, which Republican nominee Walker Stapleton plans to attend.

As surrogates, [former Democratic candidate for governor Mike] Johnston will participate in the Colorado Organization for Victim Assitance forum, while [former Democratic candidate for governor Donna] Lynne will be at the Club 20 debate — a notable debate that takes place in a largely conservative region of Colorado. Kennedy’s event will be announced in the coming weeks.

Stapleton’s camp was quick to call out Polis for essentially missing the Club 20 debate by sending a surrogate. Stapleton said in a release Monday that Polis’ decision was “an insult to our rural communities and shows Congressman Polis is not ready to represent all of our state.”

Club 20 said that it “is a shame that Candidate Polis is unwilling to participate in a non-partisan forum where our voices can be heard.”

Those voices? “[C]ounties, communities, businesses, individuals and associations in Western Colorado,” according to Club 20’s website.

Apparently, Polis believes a group representing Western Colorado is only worth a surrogate’s time, and not his own. That decision may haunt him in November.
