Rep. Gregory Meeks (D-NY) said that 2020 presidential hopeful Sen. Bernie Sanders (I-VT) should not be allowed to run in the Democratic Party’s primary because “he’s not a Democrat” during an interview on CNN on Thursday.

CNN’s Poppy Harlow asked Meeks about an editorial written by National Review editor Rich Lowry that appeared in Politico on Wednesday:

“But among the flaws on Sanders’ résumé for many progressives is one that he can do nothing about—he is a white male, and an old one. In the language of the modern left, the straight, cisgendered Sanders is burdened by his utter lack of intersectionality.”

Harlow asked Meeks whether he agreed with Lowry’s assessment of Sanders’ weaknesses and if they also applied to former Vice President Joe Biden.

“Look, the difference for me is Bernie Sanders is not a Democrat,” Meeks said. “I don’t understand why Bernie Sanders, who does not want to become a member of the Democratic Party–” Meeks began before Harlow interjected, saying Sanders has vowed to be a Democratic president if he were to win the 2020 presidential election.

“Run as a Democrat. We’ve asked him on a continuous basis if, in fact, you want to be the Democratic nominee, you should be a Democrat. If you’re not a Democrat, you should not run. He should run as an independent” Meeks said. “He’s not a Democrat. I wouldn’t allow a Republican to run as a Democrat.”

Harlow pressed Meeks on whether Sanders should not be allowed to run for the Democratic nomination.

“He should be a Democrat,” Meeks said.
