Rep. Jahana Hayes (D-CT) appeared to blame the increase in sexual assault in her congressional district on the confirmation of Supreme Court Justice Brett Kavanaugh during a press conference on Tuesday.

“I want to talk to you a little bit about how this shutdown is affecting the people in my community. From domestic abuse survivors to our rural farmers in Connecticut, this has [had] catastrophic effects in those communities,” Hayes said.

“In my district, Connecticut Five, we house five of the nine domestic abuse and violence shelters in the state. Those shelters are at risk of closing their doors. There’s an uptick in the number of reported incidents of sexual assault and domestic abuse following the Kavanaugh hearings,” Hayes said. “But there’s nowhere for these women to be serviced. We cannot be sending that kind of a message.”

Hayes first ran for Congress after former-Rep. Elizabeth Esty (D-CT) was forced to resign because she kept her former chief of staff on her payroll for three months after that male staffer had been accused of sexual harassment and threats of violence against staff.
