Dem Rep Calls For Trump’s Impeachment to Empty Chamber, Can Only Guarantee One Vote

Rep. Al Green (D-TX) took to the House floor on Wednesday to call for President Trump’s impeachement once again, but in what might be a sign of dwindling support among Democrats for impeachment, Green appeared to be addressing a completely empty Chamber of Congress.

Earlier in the week, Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D-CA) said that she did not think Trump was worth being impeached, which has caused some House Democrats to walk away from the issue.

But not Green, who was the first member of Congress to officially propose impeaching Trump in May 2017.

“Impeachment is something that we all should respect because it’s constitutional. It’s what the Constitution permits. It’s also what I believe I have a duty to bring before the Congress,” Green said. “I do not expect to have, well, I don’t guarantee more than one vote, and that’s my vote.”

Green went on to say that people are trying to convince him that members who voted for Trump’s impeachment previously would not be joining him this time.

“But there are people who seem to think by convincing me that I will be alone that somehow this will cause me not to act. My dear brothers and sisters, how you have underestimated me,” Green said. “My dear brothers and sisters, you have grossly underestimated me. If I stand alone and there is but one vote cast, I assure you that one vote will be cast, and I’ll stand alone.”

Texas Tribune reporter Gabe Schneider pointed out that the House Chamber was empty during Green’s speech:
