Dem Rep Concerned Dems are Too Focused on Russia, Not Worried About ‘Kitchen-Table’ Issues

"If we don't get focused on the kitchen table issues, the anxiety of American families, we're going to pay a cost at the polls."

Rep. Jim Himes (D-CT) expressed concerns that Democrats are too focused on the investigation into Russian interference in the 2016 elections, and not on “kitchen table issues,” ahead of the 2018 midterm election, during an appearance on MSNBC’s “Morning Joe” on Tuesday.

The Washington Post’s Robert Costa asked Himes why Democrats are not running on Russian interference if it is such a serious issue in 2018.

Himes responded by telling Costa that he has a “running joke” with Rep. Cheri Bustos (D-IL) about the Russian investigation.

“[Bustos] represents a district very different than mine. I represent Fairfield County, Connecticut. She’s in the heartland. She’s in a district that we need to figure out how to win again,” Himes said. “Every Monday morning when I see Cheri, we come up there’s a little bit of laughter, and she says ‘you know what my constituents still aren’t asking me about Russia.'”

“The point there is if the Democratic Party doesn’t get focused – and I’m not sure we’re doing this well – if we don’t get focused on the kitchen-table issues, the anxiety of American families, we’re going to pay a cost at the polls,” Himes said.

Costa followed up by asking Himes why Democrats can’t make this case about Russia in congressional districts like the one Bustos represents.

“Well, I think that’s the question that answers itself. A case that’s made here inside the Beltway rarely, I think, has a lot of resonance to middle-class families sitting around in small towns in Ohio and Michigan,” Himes responded.
