"I really think that probably the appropriate thing right now is that [Conyers] should step down as the ranking member of the Judiciary Committee," Gregory Meeks told CNN.

Rep. Gregory Meeks (D-NY) said that Rep. John Conyers (D-MI) should step down from his position as the top Democrat on the House Judiciary Committee in light of accusations of sexual harassment during an interview on Wednesday.

BuzzFeed reported on Tuesday that Conyers paid $27,000, out of his taxpayer-funded office budget, to settle a harassment case brought by a former employee.

CNN’s Poppy Harlow asked Meeks, who is a member of the Congressional Black Caucus, whether he thought Conyers should resign from Congress given these accusations.

“No one is exempt from bad behavior, and I think that he’s agreed, and I clearly see where Leader (Nancy) Pelosi has said there will be an immediate ethics committee, a review,” Meeks responded. “I really think that probably the appropriate thing right now is that he should step down as the ranking member of the Judiciary Committee and be subject to this ethics investigation.”

Conyers has denied any wrongdoing.
