Rep. Jennifer Wexton (D-VA) defended Rep. Ilhan Omar’s (D-MN) recent string of anti-Semitic comments, calling Omar a “victim,” when asked about them by a Jewish constituent during a town hall over the weekend.

“Here’s my issue. I’m a Jewish American, and I’m very concerned about the amount of rhetoric we’re hearing coming out of Congress. I expect this anti-Semitism from the extreme right, but I don’t expect it from the extreme left. As a long-term Democrat, I’m very concerned that this party is walking away from me,” he told Wexton.

The constituent then asked Wexton what she could do in Congress to lower the rhetoric and get us back to civil discourse.

“There are a number of folks who are really – who are trying to divide us for their own political ends. It’s not necessarily the right or left – sometimes it is foreign governments who are trying to divide us. So, there are many, many groups that are trying to divide and pit one against another,” Wexton said.

The Washington Examiner’s Alana Goodman pointed out of this was an “odd response” by Wexton, as she was asked to condemn Omar’s Jewish dual loyalty comments:

“But I agree with you, we should not have the rhetoric be heated like this. But you do need to keep in mind that there are many people who are just trying to divide us,” Wexton said. “And that was a lot of what I observed with Representative Omar’s comments.”

“That is why we all came together to draft a very broad, bipartisan resolution condemning hate in all its forms. Because you know, she had also been a victim of Islamophobia right before her purported comment,” Wexton said. “I certainly understand your concerns.”

Wexton then went on to blame President Trump for the extreme rhetoric in the United States.

UPDATE:

Wexton tweeted clarifying her remarks were about Russian interference in the 2016 election:
