Dem Rep: Democrats Should Say ‘Abolish ICE’ If It Helps Them Get Elected

The only thing governing the Democratic platform is apparently power, according to Rep. Jim Himes.

Rep. Jim Himes (D-CT) told CNN’s Poppy Harlow on Friday that Democrats should support or oppose “Abolish ICE” based on whatever position will help them get elected.

“Do you think ‘Abolish ICE,’ for example, leaning too far to the left, could cost your party control of the House?” Harlow asked.

“Our mission is very clear,” Himes explained. “We’re trying to win the House of Representatives.”

He added that “Abolish ICE” will not attract voters in districts that Democrats need to win to take back the majority.

“Do what you need to do in your district – what I’m warning against, let’s not have purity tests,” the Democrat argued. “Give people the room to say ‘yes’ or ‘no’ to different ideas in their districts that allow them to win.”

Himes’ argument did not address whether Democrats, when in the majority, will seek to abolish the immigration enforcement agency.
