Rep. Deb Haaland (D-NM) refused to condemn anti-Semitic comments made by fellow Democrat Rep. Ilhan Omar (D-MN) during an interview with CNN on Monday.

Omar tweeted on Sunday that recycled old stereotypes that Jewish money fuels U.S. backing for Israel. These comments have since been condemned by House Democratic leadership.

CNN’s Kate Bolduan asked Haaland what she thought about Omar’s comments and whether she agreed that they were anti-Semitic.

“I think that my colleague, she has decided not to take campaign contribution from some folks,” Haaland said after remarking that Republicans would take money from any person or organization.

“Look, it’s not up to us to police what some people say on Twitter you know with respect to that. I have never witnessed any of my colleagues promote or speak or allude to anti-Semitism,” Haaland said.

Bolduan pointed out that Omar was referring to AIPAC, which doesn’t contribute to politicans and that fellow Democrats have called the remarks anti-Semitic.

“Right, I don’t have a comment on that currently,” Haaland said.

“Because you don’t think the comment was anti-Semitic?” Bolduan asked Haaland.

Haaland then claimed that she hadn’t read the comments and thought that it alluded to campaign contributions.

Bolduan pointed out that it speaks to a long-standing, veiled anti-Semitic belief that Jewish people run things because they have money.

“Yeah, I don’t subscribe to that,” Haaland responded.
