Dem. Rep. Still Plans to Oppose Pelosi’s Bid for Speaker in January

Rep. Filemon Vela (D-TX) said during an interview that he will still oppose House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi’s (D-CA) bid to become the next speaker of the House when it comes time to vote in January.

Pelosi was able to easily win the backing of the House Democratic Caucus last week when they held their internal leadership elections, but she still needs to flip 18 House Democrats by January to secure the position.

This victory came despite a vocal minority who have been calling for new leadership and vowed to oppose Pelosi’s nomination until the bitter end.

“Two years ago, yes, I voted for her,” Vela, who has been one of the leaders of the Anti-Pelosi coalition, told the Austin American-Statesman. “But she’s been in power 16 years, and the time has just come for us to have a new leader. It’s just that simple.”

Anti-Pelosi Democrats have one major issue with their campaign: they don’t have a candidate willing to challenge Pelosi.

“We’ve had a really difficult time getting together as a group to agree to what a strategy would be,” Vela said about the group’s inability to find a challenger to Pelosi.
