Dem Rep: ‘Theoretically, Any Crime Is an Impeachable Offense’

"The Constitution says, 'high crimes and misdemeanors,' so that is, of course, a decision for the Congress to make."

Rep. Jim Himes (D-CT) said that “theoretically, any crime is an impeachable offense,” during an interview with CNN on Thursday.

CNN’s Kate Bolduan and Himes were discussing how President Trump’s former personal attorney, Michael Cohen, was sentenced to three years in prison for numerous crimes, including campaign finance violations.

Cohen allegedly made payments during the 2016 campaign to Playboy model Karen McDougal and adult film star Stormy Daniels in exchange for their silence on alleged affairs with Trump, which was a campaign finance violation.

Bolduan asked Himes if he thought campaign finance violations were impeachable offenses.

“Theoretically, any crime is an impeachable offense,” Himes said. “The Constitution says, ‘high crimes and misdemeanors,’ so that is, of course, a decision for the Congress to make.”

Himes then told Bolduan that there was no doubt in his mind that these payments by Cohen had a “material impact on the outcome of the 2016 election.”
