Dem Rep’s Office Defends Him for Leaving SOTU During ‘USA’ Chant

The president's speech inspired a wave of patriotism among Republican members. Was it too much for Rep. Luis Gutierrez (D-IL)?

At President Trump’s State of the Union speech on Tuesday night, Rep. Luis Gutierrez (D-IL) apparently did not want to stay for a patriotic moment in the Capitol dome, when the GOP side of the congressional delegation erupted in chants of “U-S-A.”

“And freedom stands tall over one more monument, this one,” Trump said, pointing to the ceiling of the House chamber. “This Capitol. This living monument.”

“This is the monument to the American people,” he declared.

At this, Republican members of Congress leapt to their feet in applause, chanting in unison, “U-S-A! U-S-A! U-S-A!”

The camera cut to the Democratic side, where many members remained seated. But Gutierrez stood up and walked out of the room.

The representative’s spokesperson defended Gutierrez’s walkout as the Democrat merely “trying to get ahead of the crowd”:
