Dem Senator on Franken Last Week: Sometimes Good People Do Bad Things

Sen. Mazie Hirono (D-HI) last week said of Sen. Al Franken (D-MN), who at the time had been accused of sexually assaulting several women, that sometimes “good people do bad things.”

Now, though, a week later, Hirono has added her name to the growing list of Senate Democrats who are calling for Franken’s resignation.

“I have served with them before we knew that, that they engaged in this kind of behavior, which, by the way, anybody who engages in this behavior should be held accountable,” Hirono said during an interview last week. “But, notice that good people do bad things.”

Hirono told CNN’s Jake Tapper, on Wednesday:

“This is a time where we can make a culture change, and for myself, it was a very difficult decision because Al Franken is a friend … I want to be part of the change, and I really support all of the women who are coming forward who have the courage, and we need to create an environment where that is okay, and their stories are taken to heart and that we show them compassion, and we need more of it because it’s enough, it’s enough.”

The only thing that has changed in the past week is that several more women have come forward and accused Franken of groping or trying to kiss them forcibly.

It would appear that Hirono’s desire to be “part of the change” has more to do with political convenience than anything else.
