Democrat Dan McCready is coming under intense scrutiny this week for refunding a donation from controversial congresswoman and reputed anti-Semite, Ilhan Omar (D-MN).

According to WSOC’s Joe Bruno, McCready returned a $2,000 donation from Omar, citing his belief that “there is no place for divisiveness in politics.”

McCready is once again running to represent North Carolina’s 9th Congressional District after a judge ruled that election tampering invalidated the November 2018 election. McCready is running to replace Rep. Robert Pittenger (R-NC), who represented a Republican-leaning district, according to the Cook Political Report.

That could explain why he decided to return the donation of a far-left liberal who has in recent months presented herself as an unapologetic anti-Semite. Republicans and even some Democrats have called out Omar for these remarks.

But many using the #IStandWithIlhan hashtag on Twitter are resolute in their support for her. That includes North Carolina state Sen. Mujtaba Mohammed, who represents a district just north of Charlotte. On Wednesday, he tweeted:

McCready’s reasoning for returning the money, a supposed opposition to the political divisiveness that Omar represents, is a bit flimsy as well. In the lead up to the 2016 presidential election, McCready told the Guardian that Donald Trump represented “the greatest threat to our constitution and our democracy of my lifetime.”

More likely, McCready was eager to avoid any association with a reputed anti-Semite and lightning-rod for conservative anger. But if that political calculation comes at the cost of Democrat support, he may regret that decision in the near future.
