Ex-Gov. Phil Bredesen (D-TN), the Democratic nominee for Bob Corker’s U.S. Senate seat in Tennessee, dropped $2 million more of his own money into his campaign on Friday. The loan brought his personal contributions or loans in the race to $5.5 million, less than a year after he told The Tennessean he wouldn’t be spending his own money on the race.

In something of an entrance interview in the race, published in December 2017, Bredesen told the USA TODAY NETWORK – Tennessee, which owns The Tennessean, that “he would not be contributing any personal money into his race.”

Perhaps surprisingly, Bredesen, a former Nashville mayor who has earned millions privately in the health care industry and helped bankroll some of his past campaigns, said he would not be contributing any personal money into his race. He said he doesn’t think it will be necessary.

“I think at this point, I’ve earned the right to go out and raise money,” he said, adding that people have already stepped up in wide numbers over the last 48 hours.

Fast-forward less than a year, and Bredesen has dropped a staggering $5.5 million on his own race. Bredesen loaned $2 million to his campaign on Friday. Before Friday, he had loaned his campaign $3,455,000, and contributed another $53,139.65.

Then again, $5.5 million may not be too much to Bredesen. According to his personal financial disclosure filed in July 2018, Bredesen – a former governor, mayor of Nashville, and businessman – is worth tens of millions of dollars.
