Rep. Jim Himes (D-CT) admitted during an interview Tuesday that he had no way of knowing whether the FBI was being transparent with investigators after reports surfaced that five months of text messages between two senior investigators leading the Russia probe went missing.

The Hill reported on Monday:

“Attorney General Jeff Sessions on Monday announced the Justice Department will investigate missing text messages sent between two FBI agents critical of President Trump, joining the chorus of Republican lawmakers who are eager to recover the exchange.”

CNN’s Wolf Blitzer asked Himes if he had confidence that the FBI is being fully transparent about the missing text messages.

“I don’t know,” Himes admitted. “You know, I have no way of knowing. I don’t know what the policies are for text retention.”

Himes then told Blitzer that he thought this wasn’t a scandal.

“The right wing and Republicans will do their best to create a sense of scandal as they always do,” Himes said. “The light of day will show that this is evidenceless conspiracy building [that is] done to fuel mouth-breathers like Sean Hannity and to excite the Republican activist base.”
