Rep. Tim Ryan (D-OH) admitted during an MSNBC interview that last week’s government shutdown in his estimation hurt the Democratic Party.

The Daily Beast’s Sam Stein asked Ryan if he thought the Democratic Party hurt itself by shutting down the government last week.

“I think it definitely hurt us. There’s no question about it,” Ryan told Stein. “I think we went in as a party without a plan, without a strategy on how we were going to get out or what the end game was, so we lost before it started in the sense that we weren’t prepared in my estimation to figure out what exactly it is we wanted.”

Ryan then told Stein that he didn’t think the Democratic Party built a big enough coalition to be successful before the shutdown.

“We were talking about just the Dreamers. There’s also truck drivers who are losing their pensions, guys who have spent 40 years driving trucks missing baseball games, missing soccer matches for their kids and birthday parties. Their pension will go from $3,500 a month to $1,500 a month,” Ryan explained.

Ryan concluded by telling the “Morning Joe” panel that Democrats should have been standing on stage with the Dreamers, the Teamsters, coal miners, and people who need addiction treatment and recovery.
