Democrats Are Already Talking About Primarying Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez

New York Democrats are already fed up with freshman Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, and that has spurred at least one Democrat to begin talks about recruiting other candidates to challenge her in 2020.

Unfortunately the Democrat in question requested anonymity, which as granted by The Hill, but here’s what that lawmaker said:

“What I have recommended to the New York delegation is that you find her a primary opponent and make her a one-term congressperson,” the Democratic lawmaker, who requested anonymity, told The Hill. “You’ve got numerous council people and state legislators who’ve been waiting 20 years for that seat. I’m sure they can find numerous people who want that seat in that district.”

The driving force behind the move is Ocasio-Cortez’s open willingness to back primary challengers to sitting members of the New York congressional delegation. Specifically, Ocasio-Cortez is working with the group Justice Democrats, which helped elect her in 2018. Now the group is targeting Rep. Henry Cuellar (D-TX), looking for a suitable candidate to primary the Texas Democrat.

The move has caused Ocasio-Cortez to make a few enemies on Capitol Hill in the few short weeks she’s been there. She’s also made a few enemies in New York.

“She’s pissing off a lot of people and has probably made a lot of enemies. … A lot of people who are furious with her are Joe’s allies, including some named Crowley,” said the insider, referring to Crowley’s cousin, Elizabeth Crowley, a former New York City councilwoman. “She is a woman. She’s been moving more to the left. She would be someone interesting.”

Then there’s her rumored feud with Rep. Hakeem Jeffries (D-NY). Last month, Politico reported that it was Ocasio-Cortez’s “highest priority” to take out the fellow New York congressman. Ocasio-Cortez called the news “birdcage lining” reporting, but Democrats on the Hill continue to be wary of the powerful freshman, who has a Twitter megaphone larger than anyone in Washington, D.C., save for President Trump.
