Democrats Blow Another Special Election Opportunity

Even with low turnout, no incumbent, and national attention, Democrats couldn't quite get the win in Ohio.

Democrats Blow Another Special Election Opportunity

Despite the close election in Ohio’s 12th Congressional District, Republicans still found a way to win in the face of low turnout and a Democratic push for the seat. Republican Troy Balderson will represent the district for the remainder of the current Congress.

Balderson defeated Democrat Danny O’Connor by a margin of only a few hundred votes in the heavily Republican district. The Democrat may have been hurt in the final days by his faltering on the question of supporting Nancy Pelosi. The close result could signal trouble for Republicans across the country in November, but the GOP will simply take the win tonight.

The Republican congressman-elect will have to run for reelection in November.

Former Rep. Pat Tiberi (R-OH) vacated the seat in January to take over the Ohio Business Roundtable.
