Democrats Divided: ‘Abolish ICE’ Protests Split Liberals and Red-State Dems

There’s a growing rift within the Democratic Party over the U.S. Immigrations and Customs Enforcement (ICE) agency. Liberals, led by socialist candidate Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (D-NY), want the organization abolished, citing problems along the southern U.S. border involving immigrant children being separated from their parents.

Those liberals have the support of Sens. Elizabeth Warren (D-MA) and Kirsten Gillibrand (D-NY), both of whom are considered to be 2020 presidential candidates.

But the idea that the Democratic Party wants to abolish the organization responsible for keeping our borders safe is troubling to the electoral prospects of some Democrats, many of whom are running in states that Donald Trump won by healthy margins in 2016.

One of those red-state Democrats, Sen. Bill Nelson (D-FL), recently said that he does not believe ICE should be abolished. Democrat candidates in Arizona and Nevada made similar remarks.

But the Democrat running to unseat Sen. Ted Cruz (R-TX) joined the socialist and far-left liberals in his party when he told a Texas radio station that abolishing ICE was “fine.”

“If it’s reorganizing the Department of Homeland Security and changing the functions of ICE, having greater accountability, abolishing that agency altogether, that’s fine,” he told a Texas radio station. “But there will still have to be enforcement of our immigration laws in this country.”

Those comments follow an interaction with O’Rourke at an event last week at which a woman told him ICE is a “terroristic organization” and compared it to the “Gestapo.”

As The Hill notes, the fight over ICE just “highlights divisions between progressives who want to play hardball and energize the base, and centrist Democrats focused on the 2018 midterm elections.”

By arguing over this particular policy, Democrats are giving Republicans a cudgel with which to beat them until November.
