Democrats Divided: FIVE Different Responses to Trump’s SOTU

When Sen. Bernie Sanders (I-VT), a 2016 Democratic presidential candidate, said that he would deliver his own response to President Trump’s State of the Union on Tuesday night, he became the fifth announced ‘resistance’ figure to attempt to rebut the president’s speech.

Rep. Joe Kennedy, III (D-MA) will give the official Democratic response to Trump’s speech, followed by a Spanish-language response, according to The Washington Post’s count:

Rep. Maxine Waters (D-CA), the first congressional delegate to call for Trump’s impeachment, will speak on Black Entertainment Television (BET). She has dabbled in conspiracy theories about the president’s connections to Russia for months, and it’s likely she’ll continue her impeachment quest on BET’s airwaves.

And former Rep. Donna Edwards (D-MD), who lost the 2016 Marlyand senate race to now-Sen. Chris Van Hollen (D-MD), will deliver a left-wing Tea Party-style response separate from the Democratic Party.

Meanwhile, Sanders’ response will be broadcast on social media following Trump’s speech:

Democrats are heading into 2018 hoping to unseat enough Republicans to reclaim Congress, but on one of the biggest political nights of the year, they risk appearing divided and disorganized.
