Democrats Divided: Schumer Touts Budget Deal While Pelosi Bashes

Chuck Schumer and Nancy Pelosi showed just how divided the Democratic Party is on Wednesday.

The division within the Democratic Party was on full display on Tuesday when Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer (D-NY) took the Senate floor to praise a two-year budget deal while, at the same time, House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi (D-CA) was on the House floor decrying the same agreement.

Schumer took to the Senate floor at 12:49 p.m. EST to praise the two-year budget.

“I’m pleased to announce that we have reached a two-year budget deal to lift the spending caps for defense and urgent domestic priorities far above current spending levels,” Schumer boasted. “The budget deal doesn’t have everything Democrats want. It doesn’t have everything Republicans want. But it has a great deal of what the American people want.”

Schumer then explained in detail how the two-year budget deal would benefit the American people.

“The budget deal is a win for the American people. It will also do so much good for our military and for so many middle-class Americans,” Schumer said.

Schumer concluded by expressing his desire that the House pass this two-year budget deal.

But while Schumer was praising the budget deal, Pelosi was in the midst of her ongoing “filibuster,” of the budget deal.

Pelosi took to the House floor around 10:40 a.m. EST and began reading various letters from so-called Dreamers in an attempt to prevent a vote on the budget deal, which Pelosi objects to because it does not include legislation to protect Dreamers.

NBC’s Kasie Hunt pointed out on Twitter the strange Pelosi-Schumer dichotomy that was taking place:

At publishing time, Pelosi was still on the House floor reading letters from Dreamers.
