Democrats Launch $90M Dark Money Effort in Battleground States

For Our Future, a nationwide super PAC focused on grassroots Democratic turnout, announced Friday it’s hiring a new campaign director and hoping to amass a budget of $80 million to $90 million that will be targeted to seven battleground states in 2020.

The group claims its targeted audience will be Democratic-leaning 2020 voters, amely people of color and so-called ‘sporadic voters’ who don’t frequently cast ballots,” according to Politico’s Marc Caputo.

In the past, For Our Future has been funded by labor unions and billionaire environmentalist Tom Steyer. It’s not clear how the group plans to raise the figure it announced Friday, but as Caputo notes, it is tied closely to a dark money group that may boost its coffers without disclosing donors:

For Our Future operates in tandem with a “dark money” political nonprofit called For Our Future Action Fund that doesn’t have to disclose donors.

The group hired Ashley Walker to run the operation in 2020. Walker previously served as President Obama’s Florida campaign manager in 2008 and 2012 and worked on For Our Future’s efforts in Florida in the 2016 and 2018 cycles as well.

The group plans to target seven states: Florida, Michigan, Nevada, Ohio, Pennsylvania, Virginia and Wisconsin. Of those, Trump won five in 2016. Nationally, some Democrats have already written off Ohio as unwinnable in 2020, but there are several other states that had much closer margins in 2016.
