Democrats’ Newest Liberal Darling is Gunning for Pelosi, Other Incumbent Dems

Democratic socialist Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, the 28-year-old liberal who shocked the political world by defeating 10-term incumbent Rep. Joe Crowley (D-NY) in Tuesday’s primary, came out swinging on Wednesday as she basked in the national spotlight.

It’s time for “a new generation of leadership,” Ocasio-Cortez said, according to the Washington Post. House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi, 78, was asked to react to that claim.

The California Democrat deflected questions Wednesday about the generational divide that is shaping up ahead of the November elections, as her party has nominated dozens of younger newcomers to politics, energized in reaction to President Trump, who are preaching a new brand of politics.

“Well I’m female, I’m progressive,” Pelosi told reporters at a Wednesday morning news conference, vowing to stay in office. “What’s your problem? Two out of three ain’t bad.”

Crowley was widely viewed as Pelosi’s most likely successor. His absence on Capitol Hill next year either opens the door to a new, younger option, or could further entrench Pelosi in her leadership role.

Ocasio-Cortez is making it her business to ensure it’s the former.

“I do think that we do need to elect a generation of new people to Congress in both parties,” Ocasio-Cortez replied. “Some of the issues that we even have today may have to do with some of the calcified structures and relationships…. In certain seats where it’s appropriate, I think a new leaf can actually mean a lot of opportunity for the party and our future.”

But Ocasio-Cortez didn’t stop with Pelosi. She also endorsed Rep. Stephanie Murphy’s (D-FL) challenger, Chardo Richardson. Murphy, 39, is a first-term congresswoman from Central Florida.

Chardo Richardson, the primary challenger to U.S. Rep. Stephanie Murphy of Winter Park, hasn’t gotten much traction so far — but the Democratic Party’s biggest new star, Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, made sure to endorse him after her stunning victory in New York on Tuesday night.

Ocasio-Cortez’s willingness to confront her party may endear her to certain wings of the Democratic Party, but it’s likely to gain her some enemies, too. Less than 24 hours after her victory, Ocasio-Cortez went after two liberal women in her own party. That’s likely to rub some folks, particularly in Washington, the wrong way.
