The Democratic Party has selected Milwaukee, Wisconsin as its site for the Democratic National Convention in 2020, according to a Wall Street Journal report. The convention is expected to take place from July 13-16 next year.

Democrats picked Milwaukee over finalist cities Miami, Florida and Houston, Texas. Republicans selected Charlotte, North Carolina for its host city. The Republican National Convention won’t take place until August 24-27, however.

It’s entirely likely that the selection of a Wisconsin city was no accident. Many Democrats were baffled by 2016 Democratic nominee Hillary Clinton’s decision to not campaign in the traditionally blue state during the general election that year.

When Donald Trump won the state, along with Michigan and Pennsylvania, Democrats were equally flabbergasted and frustrated with the Clinton campaign for not locking down support in those states. Wisconsin had not gone to a Republican presidential candidate since 1984 when Ronald Reagan ran for reelection.

Following her defeat, party activists questioned Mrs. Clinton’s decision not to campaign in Wisconsin during the general election.

Recapturing those three states, and reconnecting with the blue-collar voters in the region who embraced the president, have been among the Democrats’ top challenges entering 2020.

The Journal also reported that DNC Chair Tom Perez has a personal connection to Milwaukee – it’s where his wife Ann grew up and where the couple was married.
