While Joe Biden may not have been mentioned at all during the first night of the DNC debates, he was the main target of nearly every Democrat on stage Thursday night in Miami.

Sens. Bernie Sanders (I-VT) and Kamala Harris (D-CA) were among two of Biden’s most vocal critics.

Arguments that have hovered around Biden for months, which he has mostly brushed aside in above-the-fray fashion that left his front-runner status secure, were made directly to his face on the Democratic debate stage in Miami. Sen. Kamala Harris played the most dramatic part, but most of Biden’s nine rivals, including Sen. Bernie Sanders, played some role in crafting a painful string of indictments.

Biden, the arguments went, is at age 76 from the wrong generation to lead Democrats in 2020. His paeans to the supposedly more civil Senate of his 30s, as well as his own record in those days, show racial insensitivity. He’s gotten big questions, like the 2002 Iraq War vote, wrong. He’s been played for a fool by Republicans in his efforts to show that he is a consummate doer and dealmaker.

Biden’s response to these critiques was “decidedly uneven,” according to Politico’s John Harris.

Harris made her critiques personal when she “owned Biden” for five minutes on the issue of race. “As the only black person on this stage, I’d like to speak on the issue of race,” Harris began. But then she laid into Biden for his past position on busing, segregation, and his comments last week about segregationists.

“And it was not only that, but you also worked with them to oppose busing,” Harris continued, the debate hall quiet. “And you know, there was a little girl in California who was part of the second class to integrate her public schools, and she was bused to school every day. And that little girl was me.”

When all was said and done, all Biden could offer up was, “Anyway, my time is up. I’m sorry.”

Political observers blasted Biden’s performance, saying he, “dated himself,” “underperformed,” and “was eaten alive.”
