Sen. Jeff Merkley (D-OR) seemed to suggest that Democrats would not restore the filibuster if they retook the Senate majority in 2018 during a press conference on Thursday.

A reporter asked Merkley if Democrats would consider changing the rules to bring back the filibuster for Supreme Court nominees, should Sen. Mitch McConnell (R-KY) do away with the filibuster and should Democrats win the majority in 2018.

“Well, it’s a question that would take us into the future. What we realize is that we can’t have one set of rules when the Republicans are in charge and a different set of rules when the Democrats are in charge,” Merkley said.

“It’s a difficult question that we would have to wrestle with as we go back,” Merkley said. “Hopefully, the Senate majority will come to its senses and leave this rule in place. It’s that important.”

Merkely apparently is not so upset with Republicans potentially eliminating the filibuster enough to reinstate it down the road.
