Dems’ 2020 Infighting Has Already Begun: Sanders vs. Howard Schultz

“It concerns me that so many voices within the Democratic Party are going so far to the left,” former Starbucks CEO Howard Schultz said this week. “I ask myself how are we going to pay for these things?”

Schultz was referring to Sen. Bernie Sanders’ (I-VT) “Medicare For All” single-payer health care plan and his plan that guarantees a job for every American that wants one.

Apparently asking that question crossed a line for Sanders.

“I think his comment is dead wrong,” Sanders told Chris Cuomo on CNN Thursday night.

“You have a guy who thinks that the United States apparently should remain the only major country on earth not to guarantee health care to all people,” added Sanders, speaking on “Cuomo Prime Time.”

Sanders did not, however, answer Schultz’s question about how he plans to pay for his projects, a frequent criticism of Clinton’s in 2016.

Sanders, who launched a better-than-expected primary challenge to Hillary Clinton in 2016 for the Democratic presidential nomination, is expected to make another run at the White House in 2020.

And Schultz, when he announced he would be stepping down from his role at Starbucks, ignited a firestorm of rumors when he said he wanted to pursue a new career in “public service.”

Schultz’s slight against Sanders’ plan, and Sanders’ response, is likely one of the first public skirmishes between potential 2020 presidential candidates. It’s bound to only get uglier from here.
