Dems Are Claiming Obamacare Mandate Repeal Will “Kick” Millions Off Insurance. That’s a Lie.

Several senators have claimed the GOP's effort to repeal Obamacare's individual mandate will "kick" 13 million off their health insurance. That's a distortion of the facts.

Dems Are Claiming Obamacare Mandate Repeal Will “Kick” Millions Off Insurance. That’s a Lie.

With the GOP adding Obamacare individual mandate repeal to their tax cut effort, Democrats are again doing a full-court press to defend the law.

Several Senate Democrats are re-warming a favorite line of theirs from the Obamacare repeal fight: the GOP is ‘kicking’ 13 million people off their insurance, or ‘taking health care away’ from 13 million people.

The only problem with these claims? They’re lies.

It’s convenient for Democrats to paint a picture of a cruel-hearted GOP “ripping health care away” from millions, but that’s not what the Congressional Budget Office (CBO) said in their report on individual mandate repeal.

The key paragraph in the CBO’s report, with our emphases added:

Those effects would occur mainly because healthier people would be less likely to obtain insurance and because, especially in the nongroup market, the resulting increases in premiums would cause more people to not purchase insurance.

Both CBO explanations focus on choice: “less likely to obtain” and “cause more people not to purchase” insurance.

Democrats could attempt to criticize Republicans on the latter point, that premium increases would convince some not to purchase insurance. But it’s entirely disingenuous for Democrats to claim the GOP is trying to “kick” people off their insurance.
