Dems Revolt: Pressure Builds on Pelosi to Start Impeachment Proceedings Against Trump

Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D-CA) is facing growing pressure from House Democrats to bring impeachment proceedings against President Trump, according to multiple reports.

The pressure came to a head at two separate meetings Pelosi had with House Democratic leadership and members of the House Judiciary Committee on Monday night.

The Washington Post reported that members of Pelosi’s “own leadership team confronted her in a contentious Monday night meeting and argued that it was time to begin an impeachment inquiry into President Trump, according to multiple sources in the room.”

“During the Monday night leadership meeting, Pelosi was speaking about how Democrats’ messaging isn’t breaking through because everyone is talking about corruption, special counsel Robert S. Mueller’s report and impeachment. That’s when Rep. Jamie Raskin (D-Md.), a subcommittee chairman on Judiciary, jumped in to say something along the lines of “Madam Speaker, you’ve just made a great case for an impeachment inquiry,” according to sources in the room who summarized his words.”

“It was a big debate and was long and very emotional,” a source inside the Democratic leadership meeting told NBC News.

The calls for impeachment didn’t stop at the weekly Democratic leadership meeting. Impeachment was “also raised at a separate weekly meeting Monday evening among Democratic leaders and committee chairs,” according to NBC News.

“We’ve always said one thing will lead to another as we get information,” Pelosi said during the meeting to her members, according to NBC News. “We still have unexhausted avenues here,” she added, referring specifically to the ability for Democrats to use inherent contempt against those who defy subpoenas.
