Dems to Voters: We Don’t Care You Don’t Want a Government Shutdown

Dems to Voters: We Don’t Care You Don’t Want a Government Shutdown

A new Politico/Morning Consult poll released Wednesday shows that Americans are widely opposed to a government shutdown, even as Democrats make more noise on that possibility as we approach the end of the month.

Sixty-five percent of voters said Congress should “take all necessary steps to avoid a government shutdown,” while only 17 percent said they will accept a shutdown “if it helps them achieve their policy goals.”

At the same time, a new article in The Hill shed light on the Democratic Party’s long list of demands to avoid a shutdown, including:

  • A clean funding bill
  • No “conservative policy” additions
  • No changes to Obamacare
  • No changes to “Obama-era rules” on “overtime pay and retirement advice”
  • No budget that hikes defense spending while cutting spending elsewhere

The Hill also noted that Republican leaders have already agreed to avoid defunding Planned Parenthood or putting “a down payment” on Trump’s border wall, two items Democrats had already threatened a shutdown over.

Democrats are taking their signals from the top, with both Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer and House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi refusing to rule out a shutdown. This is quite a change from their apocalyptic language over the GOP-led shutdown in 2013.

As NTK Network pointed out, Schumer even warned in 2013 that a Democrat-led shutdown over immigration would be “chaos.” What a difference four years makes.
