Dems Want to Take GOP to Task for Trump Tariffs, But One Big Thing is Missing

The Hill reported over the weekend that Democrats are looking to go on offense over President Trump’s tariffs this election year, sticking the GOP with any economic impact the tariffs may have on their constituents.

States that rely on agriculture could be hit particularly hard by retaliatory tariffs from China. That could give Democrats in states like North Dakota, Montana, Indiana, Missouri and Florida — all of are represented by Senate Democrats up for reelection this year — a new argument to make against the president and his allies in Congress.

GOP strategist Alex Conant, former communications director for the presidential campaign of Sen. Marco Rubio (R-FL), acknowledged that the negative economic impacts of tariffs could hurt the GOP in the fall.

That said, one major thing is missing from the Democrats’ strategy: an action plan for actually stopping Trump’s tariffs.

The Hill story did not mention any legislation Democrats would consider that could stop tariffs from going into effect. And Democrats can’t depend on stopping tariffs based on their relationships with the president, a Republican whom some of them may want to impeach.

That begs an obvious question: if Democrats do take back the House and the Senate, how will they stop President Trump’s proposed tariffs? Like their takes on health care and the economy in 2018, there’s a lot of ‘talk’ and no proposed ‘walk’ from the minority party right now.
