Deputy Attorney General Rod Rosenstein said that the Department of Justice (DOJ) is actively targeting criminals who are using cryptocurrency, like Bitcoin, during a discussion with former Gov. Tim Pawlenty (R-MN) at the Financial Services Roundtable on Monday.

Pawlenty asked Rosenstein if there is anything more the United States government can do to deter individuals and nation-state actors from conducting cyberattacks against U.S. businesses.

“Absolutely,” Rosenstein responded, before explaining to Pawlenty the various ways that DOJ is focusing on this issue, and the challenges DOJ has confronted.

“A new challenge we face of course is cryptocurrency, because a lot of these schemes involve Bitcoin and other cryptocurrencies, which do not flow through the traditional financial systems. So what we’re working on now with our cybercrimes task force within the department is an effort to develop a compressive strategy to deal with that, ” Rosenstein said.

Previously, the Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) chairman Jay Clayton told the Senate Banking Committee that he may need Congress to create legislation that would regulate virtual currency, like Bitcoin, in the future.
