Despite ‘39,000 Words’ of Fawning Profiles, Beto Still Down 9 Points to Cruz

The state of the race hasn't changed in the three weeks since Quinnipiac last polled the Texas U.S. Senate race, even as Democrat Beto O'Rourke is the subject of multiple cushy profiles.

Despite ‘39,000 Words’ of Fawning Profiles, Beto Still Down 9 Points to Cruz

Sen. Ted Cruz (R-TX) still has a nine-point lead (54-45) on Rep. Beto O’Rourke (D-TX), the same lead Cruz had three weeks ago, according to polling by Quinnipiac released on Thursday.

Cruz’s lead hasn’t changed, even though multiple national publications have stepped up to write, according to one reporter’s account, “39,000 words” of profiles about O’Rourke, the photogenic House member challenging Cruz.

It turns out profiles in BuzzFeed and GQ appear not to move the voters of Texas.

In the last three weeks, Republicans remain behind Cruz in strong margins (94-6 in both polls), while O’Rourke has lost some Democratic support (94-4 to 93-7) and has picked up some independents (51-47 to 56-42).

But the overall lead for Cruz remains the same: nine points, not beyond striking distance for O’Rourke but not the kind of toss-up contest in a red state that would normally inspire think pieces and starry-eyed profiles.

The 39,000 words on O’Rourke may not be enough to win in Texas, but it could be fodder for his next move post-November – whatever that may be.
