Despite Polis Spending $20M, Stapleton Within the Margin of Error in CO-Gov.

Rep. Jared Polis (D-CO) is about to pass $20 million in personal spending on the Colorado gubernatorial race, and he still could not push past the margin of error in the first poll measuring his contest with Republican Walker Stapleton.

The Colorado Sun reported Tuesday that Polis is about to reach a new spending milestone in his self-funded effort to be Colorado’s next governor:

Democratic congressman – and multimillionaire – Jared Polis neared the $20 million mark in terms of his own spending to win the Colorado governor’s office.

That’s according to reports filed Monday tallying fundraising and spending from Sept. 13 to Sept. 26.

Polis’ campaign has spent $19.4 million on his bid to become governor so far, with $11.2 million of that spent winning a four-way primary in late June. Polis spent $2.4 million in the final month of the primary alone.

Despite outspending Stapleton nearly 10-to-1, Polis did not escape the margin of error in a public poll showing him with a narrow lead on the Republican. ABC Denver reported:

Rep. Jared Polis leads state Treasurer Walker Stapleton by 7 points in the Colorado governor’s race, according to the first publicly-released poll of the race done in recent months.

…The poll found that Polis leads Stapleton 47 percent to 40 percent, though 11 percent of respondents were undecided, meaning that group could theoretically swing the vote either way come November. The margin of error for the poll was ±4 percent.

If Polis makes it across the finish line victorious in November, it will certainly be due in part to his heavy election spending. Even that may not be enough, though.
