Department of Homeland Security (DHS) Secretary Kirstjen Nielsen warned Congress at a Senate Judiciary Committee hearing on Wednesday that her department lacked the authority to stop drone attacks on the United States.

While much of the questioning from the committee was expected to focus on immigration and the impending DACA showdown, Nielsen highlighted the critical threat that unmanned aircraft systems (UASs) could pose to the country in her prepared remarks.

“I also encourage Congress to empower us to address emerging dangers,” she told the committee. “For example, we currently lack the authorities needed to counter threats from unmanned aircraft systems. We are concerned that UASs could be used as weapons, for surveillance, or to smuggle illicit goods into the homeland.”

Nielsen’s comments echo September testimony from FBI Director Chris Wray.

“I think the expectation is that [drone attacks are] coming here, imminently,” the FBI Director told the Senate last year, citing terrorists’ past use of the weapons systems on battlefields in the Middle East.
