Did Colin Kaepernick, Now at the Center of Nike Scandal, Actually Sacrifice Anything?

Former San Francisco 49ers quarterback Colin Kaepernick announced on Twitter that he had signed a deal with Nike to be one of the faces of Nike’s 30th anniversary “Just Do It” campaign on Sunday.

“Believe in something, even if it means sacrificing everything. #JustDoIt,” Kaepernick tweeted with a photo of himself.

The Associated Press reported:

“Kaepernick already had a deal with Nike that was set to expire, but it was renegotiated into a multi-year deal to make him one of the faces of Nike’s 30th anniversary “Just Do It” campaign, according to a person familiar with the contract. The person spoke to The Associated Press on condition of anonymity because Nike hasn’t officially announced the contract.”

“The source says Nike will feature Kaepernick on several platforms, including billboards, television commercials, and online ads. Nike also will create an apparel line for Kaepernick and contribute to his Know Your Rights charity. The deal puts Kaepernick in the top bracket of NFL players with Nike.”

Kaepernick has become a political lightning rod in recent years for his protests of the national anthem, which Kaepernick claims is the reason why an NFL team has not signed him.

However, Denver Broncos General Manager John Elway recently told reporters that the Broncos had offered Kaepernick, who is a free agent, a contract, but Kaepernick refused it.

It should also be pointed out that when Kaepernick began protesting the national anthem before games, it was not at the height of his football career. Rather, it was when he was fighting for a roster spot on the 49ers after serval seasons of mediocre play.

In 2016, “Pro Football Talk” reported that the 49ers were seriously considering cutting Kaepernick because “he’s not a very good quarterback.”

According to “Pro Football Talk“:

“Jay Glazer said on FOX that the 49ers are deeply concerned with Kaepernick’s decline as a player, which started last season when he struggled before getting benched, then got even worse this offseason when he lost significant muscle mass when he couldn’t work out following multiple surgeries.”

Following the publicity surrounding Kaepernick’s anthem protests, the 49ers were basically forced to keep the declining Kaepernick.

So, is it really accurate for Kaepernick to say that his anthem protests cost him “everything,” when all its done is keep a mediocre quarterback relevant well beyond his playing career?
