Did Dems Blow Their Last Chance to Get a DACA Solution in 2018?

Democrats rejected a White House deal that would have extended DACA protections through 2020 in exchange for $25 billion in border wall funding. Trump won border wall funding in the new spending deal anyway.

Did Dems Blow Their Last Chance to Get a DACA Solution in 2018?

Earlier this week, NTK Network noted that Democrats essentially told the White House this weekend it’s ‘citizenship or nothing‘ for recipients of Obama-era Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals (DACA) protections.

Democrats may come to regret their decision to reject a White House deal, though – a DACA extension for two-and-a-half years in exchange for $25 billion in border wall funding – because President Trump may receive border wall funding one way or another.

The Associated Press reported:

A different person said that in talks Sunday at the Capitol, White House officials said they wanted $25 billion — the full amount Trump has proposed for the wall — in exchange for extending DACA protections through September 2020. When Democrats countered that for that sum they wanted a chance at citizenship for 1.8 million immigrants in DACA, the White House turned it down and chances for a deal dissipated.

…The effort failed, and Trump ended up getting just $1.6 billion for his wall and other border security steps, a year’s worth of funds.

The takeaway? Democrats rejected a DACA deal over border wall funding, and Trump received border wall funding anyway.

Democrats may still be able to put political points on the board – they’ll argue President Trump is holding so-called DREAMers hostage to funding for his wall.

But as Americans search for real solutions to a number of problems, the Democrats look less and less like a party ready to govern when they reject deal after deal, and still lose.
