Did Politico Miss the Point of Trump’s Mar-a-Lago Talk with the Koch Brothers?

Did Politico Miss the Point of Trump’s Mar-a-Lago Talk with the Koch Brothers?

new Politico report from Ken Vogel and Josh Dawsey reveals that President Trump “had a friendly chat” with David and Bill Koch on Saturday at Mar-a-Lago, after repeated clashes on the campaign trail.

The reporters noted that the Kochs refused to mobilize their “massive political machine” to support Trump in 2016, and that Trump “boasted that the Kochs could not influence him” during the campaign.

The report, though, leaves out three crucial words that explain why Trump and the Kochs may be making nice: border adjustment tax.

The Koch network is opposed to the border adjustment tax, or BAT, which is a major component of Republican-led tax reform at this time.

CNN‘s Theodore Schleifer explained it well in a new report about how the Kochs are mobilizing against BAT:

After months of private hand-to-hand combat in the halls of Congress, the Koch operation is beginning to bring public pressure to bear on a group of Republicans who are poised to support a border adjustability tax, a central tenet of the plan pushed by House Speaker Paul Ryan. And it is doing so by aiming to turn the same political coalition energized by President Donald Trump onto those Republican leaders, the latest pull in the tension between the Kochs and Trump.

Did Trump and the Kochs discuss BAT during their unplanned chat at Mar-a-Lago? We don’t know yet, but it’s the ‘X-factor’ in their relationship until BAT either passes or dies in the tax reform fight.
