DNC Admits 2018 Hacking Attempt Was Actually a Security Test

A Thursday report from CNBC revealed that the claimed hacking attack on the Democratic National Committee (DNC) was simply a test by DNC-hired security vendors.

The DNC detected the attack on Tuesday, which it says it did not authorize, and reported it to the FBI. DNC’s security chief claimed it was evidence of foreign interference:

“This attempt is further proof that there are constant threats as we head into midterm elections and we must remain vigilant in order to prevent future attacks,” DNC Chief Security Officer Bob Lord said in a statement. “While it’s clear that the actors were going after the party’s most sensitive information — the voter file — the DNC was able to prevent a hack by working with the cyber ecosystem to identify it and take steps to stop it.”

But Thursday’s revelations undermined that narrative, and Lord backed off his claim of “attacks” on the party infrastructure.

Still, that didn’t stop the mainstream media from running with the DNC’s “attack” narrative earlier in the week.
