The Democratic National Committee (DNC) has finally started to distance itself from Rep. Keith Ellison (D-MN), the DNC vice chair and Democratic nominee for attorney general of Minnesota, after accusations of domestic abuse emerged earlier in the week.

“These allegations recently came to light and we are reviewing them. All allegations of domestic abuse are disturbing and should be taken seriously,” the DNC told NPR in a statement on Tuesday.

It should be noted that Ellison has vehemently denied these allegations against him.

“Keith’s role was drastically reduced because of his own schedule and running for office,” a Democratic also told NPR, “so he hasn’t been as involved in DNC decisions or business in recent months.”

The DNC was relatively quick to attempt to distance itself from Ellison after allegations of domestic abuse emerged. The DNC was not as quick to speak out on Ellison’s close ties and ongoing relationship with Nation of Islam leader Louis Farrakhan, an infamous hatemonger and anti-Semite.

In the 1980s and 1990s, Ellison defended Farrakhan, as well as speakers who accused Jews of collaborating with Nazis, and called Farrakhan a “role model for black youth.”

Farrakhan is a noted anti-Semite who in the past has called the Jewish people his “enemy,” “satanic,” and claimed the Jewish people are responsible for “filth and degenerate behavior,” while also praising Adolf Hitler as a “very great man.”

The Southern Poverty Law Center has classified the Nation of Islam (NOI) as a hate group because of its “deeply racist, antisemitic and anti-LGBT rhetoric.”

In 1991, Farrakhan victim-blamed the woman who accused boxer and former heavyweight champion Mike Tyson of rape, at a “Free Mike Tyson” rally in Indianapolis.

In recent months, Ellison has attempted to distance himself from Farrakhan by falsely claiming that he was never a follower of Farrakhan. The Washington Post‘s fact-checkers lambasted Ellison for his claim.

The Republican National Committee (RNC) called on DNC Chair Tom Perez to address Ellison’s “pattern of lies surrounding his relationship with Louis Farrakhan” in March, and Perez never did.
