Democratic National Committee (DNC) Chair Tom Perez expressed support for ending the Electoral College and replacing it with a popular vote system during a speech at Demand Justice event on Wednesday.

The event was focused on what Democrats could do to combat President Trump’s appointments to the Judiciary, specifically the Supreme Court.

“When you lose elections, you lose control of the ability to help people. We have won the popular vote in six out of the last seven elections, and we have been award the White House in four out of the last seven elections, ” Perez said.

Perez then criticized the fact that four of the Supreme Court Justices currently serving on the Court were appointed by a president who did not win the popular vote.

“As we have this conversation, we need to make sure we’re also talking to our colleagues and friends in the progressive movement who are talking about things like the national popular vote,” Perez said.

According to the National Popular Vote’s website, it is a bill that would “guarantee the Presidency to the candidate who receives the most popular votes in all 50 states and the District of Columbia.”

Perez than applauded Maryland for being the first state to enter this compact.

“I wish I could say we’re not going to have another election where a person loses the popular vote but wins the White House,” Perez added.
