DNC Mandates Staffers Remain Neutral in Presidential Primaries (Well, Kind Of)

The Democratic National Committee (DNC) is mandating that its staff and officers remain impartial in the upcoming 2020 Democratic presidential primary unless they are given permission by top DNC brass to help these campaigns.

The DNC’s CEO, Seema Nanda, sent a memo to staff outlining the new guidelines on Monday.

The Huffington Post reported:

“The rules would prohibit DNC staffers and officers from financial contributions to particular candidates, attendance of events that could suggest partiality, public statements or social media posts espousing presidential preferences, internal communications expressing views for or against Democratic candidates, and even gestures like displaying bumper stickers or lawn signs for individual campaigns.”

These new rules come after the DNC was criticized during the 2016 Democratic presidential primary for putting its thumb on the scale in favor of Hillary Clinton’s presidential campaign.

However, there is one rather large loophole in Nanda’s memo to DNC staff.

“Employees are prohibited from providing DNC services to any Presidential campaign…unless explicitly authorized by the CEO or her designee,” Nanda wrote.

This wording gives the DNC some wiggle room as they could theoretically still direct the DNC staff to help one presidential campaign over others, if Nanda gives the okay.
