Congressional Republicans and Democrats emerged from talks with a tentative budget deal Monday evening that could prevent another government shutdown if the House and Senate pass it and President Trump agrees to sign it.

The deal contains less than the president’s requested $5.7 billion for border wall funding, instead supplying $1.4 billion. According to the Associated Press, that should cover an additional 55 miles of new fencing, which is expected to be built in the Rio Grande Valley in Texas.

But fencing is not the only security measure included in the budget deal:

The pact also includes increases for new technologies such as advanced screening at border entry points, humanitarian aid sought by Democrats, and additional customs officers.

This weekend, Shelby pulled the plug on the talks over Democratic demands to limit immigrant detentions by federal authorities, frustrating some of his fellow negotiators, but Democrats yielded ground on that issue in a fresh round of talks on Monday.

The big question remains, however: will Trump sign off on the deal? The lead Republican negotiator, Sen. Richard Shelby (R-AL), was hopeful.

“We believe from our dealings with them and the latitude they’ve given us, they will support it,” he said. “We certainly hope so.”
