Does AOC’s New Video Hint at a 2028 Presidential Run?

"And now [Ileana] occupies the seat that I once held," Ocasio-Cortez said. "I couldn't be more proud of her, a true child of the Green New Deal."

Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (D-NY), in partnership with The Intercept, released a video on Wednesday titled, “A Message From the Future With Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez,” in which Ocasio-Cortez’s hints at a 2028 presidential run.

The almost eight-minute-long video is set a couple of decades from now and features Ocasio-Cortez narrating a story from the future about the effects that the Green New Deal would have on America, if implemented.

The video starts with Ocasio-Cortez highlighting the diversity of the 116th United States Congress before shifting to highlight criticism of the Green New Deal. “They said it was too big, it was too fast, not practical.”

Ocasio-Cortez then gives a brief history of the evolution of climate change awareness in America before claiming that there are only 12 years left for the United States to cut it’s carbon emissions in half.

“Twelve years to change everything. How we got around, how we feed ourselves, how we made out stuff, how we lived and worked, everything,” Ocasio-Cortez said. “The only way to do it was to transform our economy.”

“The wave began when Democrats took back the House in 2018, and the Senate and the White House in 2020 and launched a decade of the Green New Deal, a flurry of legislation that kicked off our social and ecological transformation to save our planet,” Ocasio-Cortez said.

She then outlined legislation that would be enacted in her vision of the future, including Medicare for All and a federal jobs guarantee.

At this point in the video, Ocasio-Cortez introduces a character by the name of Ileana, who joins America Corp Climate out of college.

Ocasio-Cortez spends the next couple minutes following Ileana’s life, which eventually leads to Ileana running for office in 2028, which is the “first cycle of publicly funded election campaigns,” according to Ocasio-Cortez.

“And now [Ileana] occupies the seat that I once held,” Ocasio-Cortez said. “I couldn’t be more proud of her, a true child of the Green New Deal.”

The video concludes shortly after this and without Ocasio-Cortez mentioning where she sees herself in the future. The year 2028, however, could hold the key to that answer.

Ocasio-Cortez will not turn the constitutionally required 35 years of age to run for president until 2024, and in Ocasio-Cortez’s version of the future, a Democratic president would be up for reelection. That means that 2028 would be the first year that she would be eligible to run for president. Coincidence?
